National Organizations
The following are just a few examples of some national animal welfare organizations. Many of them support local groups with funding and resources as well.
The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS)The Humane Society of the United States is the nation’s largest animal protection organization, rated the most effective by its peers. Since 1954, The HSUS has been fighting for the protection of all animals through advocacy, education, and hands-on programs. We rescue and care for tens of thousands of animals each year, but our primary mission is to prevent cruelty before it occurs. We're there for all animals, across America and around the world.
American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA)
Founded in 1866, the ASPCA was the first humane organization in the Western Hemisphere. Our mission, as stated by founder Henry Bergh, is “to provide effective means for the prevention of cruelty to animals throughout the United States.” While there are SPCAs and humane societies all over the country, the ASPCA is not directly affiliated with them. However, the ASPCA works nationally to rescue animals from abuse, pass humane laws and share resources with many shelters across the country.
Best Friends Animal Society
At the core of Best Friends' work is the dream that one day animals will no longer be killed in America's shelters. By implementing spay/neuter and trap/neuter/return (TNR) programs to reduce the number of animals who enter shelters, and increasing the number of people who adopt pets, we know we can end the killing. We know we can Save Them All.
At the heart of Best Friends is the Sanctuary, where, at any given time, about 1,700 animals are turning their lives around, receiving the medical help they need, and getting love and acceptance to help them overcome their past. While searching for their forever homes, they live in a scenic, healing environment among human and animal friends.
Best Friends' No More Homeless Pets Network brings animal shelters and rescue groups together from across the country to hold mutual adoption events, public education campaigns, and fundraising drives. Working together, these groups are able to save many more lives than they could in isolation.
Meanwhile, our national initiatives focus on the animals most likely to enter America's shelter system - cats, castoffs from puppy mills, and pit-bull-terrier-type dogs. More than 70 percent of cats who enter our nation's animal shelters are killed, and many of them are outdoor community cats who should have been fixed and allowed to live out their lives, instead of being taken to a shelter. An estimated 25 percent of all dogs entering shelters are pure breeds from puppy mills, and the vast majority of dogs killed in shelters are pit-bull-terrier-type dogs.
Our national initiatives keep community cats safe and out of shelters with trap/neuter/return, battle commercial breeding operations, and fight discrimination against pit bull terriers."
