- Do over Dogs: Give Your Dog a Second Chance for a First Class Life, by Pat Miller (Jun 25, 2010). This book provides excellent advice for anyone considering adoption. I highly recommend everyone read it BEFORE meeting your new family member. I don’t think people should put too much weight on assessments though, as they are often only a tiny glimpse into a complicated life. I think they can be a valuable tool, but they really can’t accurately determine what a dog will behave like in a new environment. It’s up to the new parents to determine that!
- Fired Up, Frantic, and Freaked Out: Training the Crazy Dog from Over the Top to Under Control by Laura VanArendonk Baugh (Jan 5, 2013). Many people only think of aggressive dogs as being fired up, but many of the behaviors we find so cute and friendly in dogs can actually be signs of anxiety as well. I don’t know what it was about this book, but it is the best I have read on the topic… and I’ve read plenty. It gives step-by-step instructions with just a slightly tweaked technique that really made sense to me and that has benefited my dog greatly! I spent so much time training him to follow my cues, that he didn’t have confidence to do anything without being told. From this book I learned how to shape his behavior and help him make the right decisions on his own :)
- On Talking Terms with Dogs: Calming Signals by Turid Rugaas (Dec 14, 2005). This is another book I would recommend to anyone before adopting, or even if they don’t ever plan to have a dog of their own. It is a quick read that provides some basics of canine body language.
